question about frayed strings :-(

I just noticed Merlin is fraying the bottom of my boxspring.  Should I be
concerned about the strings hanging off???  I keep picking them off now
that I know they're there but will they hurt him???  I don't know what his
obsession is with tearing the bottom of my bed apart but then...I don't
care about that only in his health... Is there anything I can cover it
with to prevent him from being hurt if frayed strings can hurt him???
