Hello everyone-

In response to the (somewhat apprehensive) post about microchipping a
ferret, I thought I'd tell about my experience with it.

I had Trace (female mf) and Muddler (male mf) microchipped when she was 1
year old and he was 6mos old. Our vet thought it was a good idea, since a
ferret can lose a collar (and any attached ID) so easily. She did mention
that its a big needle--it has to be because the chip is delivered thru a
syringe, and the chip is about the size and shape of a grain of rice--and
I'm sure that it does hurt. But I had it done because so many shelters
have readers for the microchips, and the ferret's ID numbers are now in a
nationwide registry. It means a LOT to me to know that if they get lost
and taken into a shelter, when they read the chip I will be called and can
come get them!

The ferrets' reactions: Muddler peed, but didn't squeal or anything, and
he's a VERY vocal ferret. He bled a bit, but stopped in less than 2
minutes. Trace didn't really react, no peeing or squeaking. She hardly
bled at all. They were both a little sore for the first 24 hours, but
still played. After that they were quite normal, scruffing hasn't bothered
them (when it needs to be done) and I can't feel the chips unless they are
at their low summer weight and I really poke at their shoulders.

So to sum it up: yes, it hurts; but they weren't traumatized, and I think
its really worth it in the long run.
