I'm always curious about multiple permanent residents at the shelters.
The above post is the most recent example. I wonder why there are so many
that can't be adopted out. I know that I, personally, have volunteered
several times to take a special needs ferret or two from nearby shelters
but it never happens. I have experience caring for ill ferrets with
multiple daily hand feedings, sub-q fluids, injections, etc. I have the
financial means to care for them without having to ask for donations. I
certainly can provide more personal attention than an overloaded shelter.
My veterinarian can provide information of the quality of care I give my
ferrets. My only requirement is that the ferret be officially adopted to
me. That relieves the shelter of any future liability, financial or
otherwise.

I realize that there are extenuating circumstances where it is best for
the ferret to stay at the shelter due to age, etc. But, if one just needs
personal attention and medical care, there are those of us out there who
can do that. That would leave the donations to care for the remaining
residents and maybe some of those needed surgeries could be accomplished.

I greatly respect people who operate shelters. I truly don't know how
you do it. But, I think that some shelter operators need to learn how to
"delegate" some of the responsibilities and trust others to help them out.

Just curious.
