Jaymi,
My two little boys do the same thing...always have.  Every once in a while
they will decide to just eat out of the bowl...I guess if they really are
hungry!  We keep rugs down at the bottom of the cage, we get the remnants
which only cost about $2.00 so they are cheap to replace every once in a
while.  (They also do the little "rub their butts on it when they finish in
the liter box thing too) so it needs to be changed no w and then.  We also
found that keeping one of my old fabric placematts under the dish helps.
Mostly they like to either eat it off the floor or take it under their
blanket and hide when they eat.
