This might be a bit unusual, but he might check out the "crowdfunding"
sites like Kickstarter, Fund Anything, IndieGoGo, etc.

Note: Contrary to popular belief, these are NOT sales arrangements!
The idea is contributors pay in, and in exchange get some kind of
recognition for doing so. Sometimes it is a product, other times it
is a T-Shirt, or what have you.

So just as a simple example, he could have someone design a nice "I
Saved The Ferrets" T-Shirt or something like that. Then contributors
get a T-Shirt. (Which means, of course, that you need more contributors
because you have to pay for and ship the T-Shirts. But that's the way
it works.)

It's not just T-Shirts, of course. There are lots of ways to "reward"
contributors. That was just an example. For small contributions
sometimes it's just a thank-you card. Or you can have different levels
of contribution with different rewards.

As I say, maybe an unusual way to do it, but it's an idea.
