One of my ferrets is getting on in years (estimated age is about 5-1/2
years). She's losing a lot of muscle mass and having trouble walking on
smooth surfaces such as hardwood floors and linoleum.

I had a similar problem with a previous ferret, and my vet at the time
suggested anabolic steroids. When I asked about potential liver damage,
he pointed out that the ferret was old, and would likely die before such
damage showed up. Sure enough, the steroids did the trick, and Otto spent
the last 6 months of his life zooming around the kitchen as he had before.
He finally succumbed to cancer, not liver failure.

That was 10 years ago. What are people doing in similar situations today?

P.S. Tank had the adrenal surgery, and is now back to his normal self.
