Litter training problems

My wife and I have been trying to litter train our ferret for the past
year.  He has a litter box in his room (laundry room ) but only uses it
when he feels like it.  When we let him out of his room, he will never go
back to it just to use the litter box, but he will go back there to sleep.
It seems that rewarding him for using the box has no effect on him.  We've
tried bananas, strawberries, and honey.  He just doesn't get it.
 
Is there any hope for us?  Any ideas/suggestions would be GREATLY
appreciated.
