Since you have not paid for the ferrets/cages, you haven't got a legal leg
to stand on.  It makes no difference how much money, time and love you have
put into them.
 
Did you sign any kind of contract or agreement when you got these ferrets?
If so, you are bound by the conditions of the contract.
 
Send the breeder another check for the full amount agreed on, and make sure
this one won't bounce.  You want to send a check rather than money order so
you will have proof if they cash it.
