Yes, I used to use it before I discovered wood stove pellets.  In fact,
there used to be a cat litter call Kitty Green (or something like that)
that was mainly alfalfa.  It had a nice fresh scent and covered odors
well.
 
I also went back to rabbit pellets briefly a couple years ago when there
was a shortage of wood stove pellets.  I used a bag or two to get through
the summer until wood pellets were available again.
 
I never had any problem with ferrets eating it.
