I read the post about ferrets still getting reactions even though they were
first treated with Benedryl. Unfortunately, some vets don't do this, but
they should be waiting at least 15 - 20 minutes after the Benedryl shot
before giving the rabies or distemper shots. The Benedryl needs time to
get into the ferret's system before the vaccination is given. During the
15 - 20 minutes, the vet can be checking the ferret for earmites, giving
him a good feeldown, weighing him, etc. Even after waiting the 15 - 20
minutes between the Benedryl and the vaccination, it is recommended that
the ferret and owner remain in the vet's waiting room for at least 45
minutes afterwards in case of reaction. Of course, there is no guarantee
that the Benedryl shot will stop a reaction, but it does lessen the chances
greatly. However, the waiting time of 15 - 20 minutes after the Benedryl
and then 45 minutes after the Distemper shot are a must. Unfortunately,
some ferrets still experience reactions no matter what. But, I figured I
would pass this information along just in case there are people out there
whose vets either don't give benedryl prior to shots, or who don't wait
15 minutes between the benedryl and the vaccination.
