This smacking you speak of.....could she possibly be grinding her teeth?
Or are you seeing her drool when she smacks her mouth?
 
It sounds like you really need to see an experienced ferret vet ASAP.
 
Both the drooling and teeth grinding are indications of a problem - check
the STAR* database for someone near you, or I'm sure some FMLers in your
area can help as well.
 
Sometimes it's really worth it even if you have to do some traveling to go
to a good ferret vet - my gas bill has certainly jumped since I switched
vets, but he's definitely worth it!
