"What does it mean when ferrets are asleep and they stick their
tongues out and just leave them there? Is this a ferret's way of
cooling off?"
 
I think it just means they forgot to pull in their tongue!
 
I've noticed that my guys do this less as they've gotten older, and
maybe the smarter ones do it less.  Temperature doesn't seem to
matter.  If you poke their tongue and they pull it in without really
waking up, they'll leave it in.
 
It's still pretty cute.
