The last time a pet food company had to have a recall for too much
Vitamin D (Blue Buffalo which also earlier had melamine recalls when
those where happening due to imported ingredients from China which I
guess is one way to control costs if there is a large advertising
budget) there turned out to be more types of foods affected with high
D levels than they at first thought. That also was the case with the
recent recalls of several brands of foods made at a Diamond facility
for salmonella exposure -- more types involved than at first thought.
So, if someone is feeding Mazuri it MIGHT make sense to see if the
company has checked the type of food you are feeding, if it is made
at the same facility in the same time frame, etc.

Too much Vitamin D can cause hypercalcemia which can cause calcium
deposits in the kidney and heart as well as other organs. Ferrets and
dogs are rather susceptible to this problem and if bad enough it can
cause kidney failure but luckily if the cause is found in time and the
food is stopped in time then the problems can resolve.

Anyway, the ones currently on the Mazuri recall are NOT ones you would
feed, but if you feed that brand it may pay to make sure that they are
testing the food you give if the same ingredient might have been
present in the mix.

The known foods with the problem appear to have April dates for
manufacture.
