I can wholeheartedly second this. I had a single ferret for many years.
Toto did demand a lot of attention (when he wanted it of course), but
fortunately I was around a lot to let him have it\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\,uh,er,
pay attention to him.

One of the problems of an only ferret, is that they never quite learn
to socialize well with other ferrets. Considering that ferrets are
naturally fairly social mammals, I see this as a bad thing. Toto never
did quite get along with other ferrets. The only interaction he ever
seemed to learn was to beat up on other ferrets. Then when they came
back after him, he was scared sh*tless (literally many times).

The next time I have ferrets, it will be at least two and preferably
three as a minimum. Both the ferrets and I are likely to be saner
as a result.
