Ferret Psychologist needed!

We've got a 3 year old male (neutered) who as of late has been biting hard
on the ears of our other ferrets, usually at night. He's NOT cleaning, or
nibbling on them. The others cry to the point it wakes me up out of a
sleep, and when I go in, I have to pry his jaw apart to release the grip.
They all get along, and he's been apart of this family his whole life. ??

Any thoughts on this action??

We deter it for a while with biter apple, but I'd like to know the reasons
for this new behavior.
