Do you rescue a lot of ferrets?  It's unfortunate, but some very well
intentioned people often take on more than they care bear.  Is it
possible to call came in not because they did not like ferrets but
because they felt there were to many to get adequate treatment?  I am
not accusing, since you gave no more details than an investigation,
just curious as to the circumstances.
