Well I have two boys with ears like that.  I think it is from a hematoma
on the ear (big blister thing).  Of course, I have just assumed that
since the same thing in a dog has similar affects.
 
I just use epi-otic ear cleaner for them and they are pretty good.
Sampson's is curled up so tight I can't begin to clean it otherwise.
I have had both ferrets since they were young.  Oh for the record,
Freds is a MF and Sampson is from a private breeder.
