Hey folks, if you are interested in the California legalization efforts,
this might interest you.

I recently read a nice, short, pro-ferret article in the Orange County
Regester here in California. Since I rarely see such things (though I'm at
a loss as to why), I thought I'd post it here. But since BIG is not too
fond of copyright infringement (hi BIG), I will instead paraphrase the
article. Anyone who wants the whole article (very short, only 3k) send me
an E-mail, and I'll attach it to a reply. If you can't handle attachments,
let me know, and I'll E-mail a copy on it's own. It's short and to the
point. The kind of thing you might hand to someone when they say "why ARE
Ferrets illegal?"

(PARAPHRASED, non-infringment version:)

The article is a Q&A format. A woman writes and asks if there is a ferret
ban and if so, why. The author suggests that "lack of knowledge and old
wives' tales" have kept officials from legalizing the DOMESTIC Ferret. The
article then discusses the root of the ban, suggesting that past concerns
over poultry farms got the ban started. The author then suggests that this
outdated idea hangs on with the "potential victim" now being wild birds. As
the author points out, research shows that ferrets don't establish feral
populations. The author also refutes baby attack myth by mentioning that
dogs are "200 times more likely to bite than ferrets." The author also
attacks concerns about rabies, suggesting that a vaccine has been available
for years and that there are "no reported cases" starting with a ferret!
The author concludes with a suggestion to write CDFA to help the situation.
All and all, a very well ballanced article and it covers the major issues in
short order.

[Moderator's note: (hi Dan) Wonderfully done, thank you for the paraphrase
and the info. BIG]
