I have a theory based on very limited experience that some carpet digging may
be done because the ferrets are trying to get to the rubber pad underneath.
Both my ferrets dug at various areas of the carpet in their "room" until I
replaced it with a couple of cheap 6x9 rugs from Wal-Mart. Since then they
only have dug next to the gate trying to get out. The carpet was very old
and in poor shape anyway (I had already removed the stuff from the rest of
the house) but I ripped it out because the ferts had managed to get down to
the rubber layer and I was afraid they'd eat some. Of course this is not a
good solution for most foax, but is offered more as an explanation. However
if you are replacing or putting in carpet, you might consider doing without
the rubber pad.
