I have two old ferrets who've been together all their lives.  Both are
terminally ill.  They are comfortable and enjoy short romps of an hour
or so.
 
Sooner or later one of these ferrets will die.  At that time should it's
companion also be put to sleep even if it still has some quality of life.
These ferrets have been together all their lives.
