You are on the right track with the futon.  One thing though.  I would not
suggest the tri-fold type.  A friend has one and a fuzzie.  It takes us 30
min to drag her out when she has decided that she is comfortable where she
is at.  I, on the other hand, have the pull out type.  No problem there.
It's not even a place to bolt under(hehe).  Much easier to get them out
from under.  Just be careful when returning it to the couch position on
either type.  Make sure your little ones are not underneath.  The arms that
fold down can HURT.  Other than that small thing Futons make perfect ferret
proof furniture.
