Although they are different animals, I would imagine that ferrets would be
similar to dogs and cats in remembering previous owners and friends. When I
was young, we got a German Shepard from one lady who loved him dearly, but
she had to get rid of him. He was a fiercely loyal and protective dog who
was a welcome addition to the family. A number of years later, the women
stopped by to see how the dog (Sam) was making out. She didn't get out of
her car, but it was obvious that Sam recognized her. He came over to the
car. He lifted himself, not touching the car, and sniffed her face. Since
he never behaved this way with anyone else ever, it was clear he recognized
her. After sniffing her, he got down and wandered off - as my mom tells the
story, "he said 'hi' to her but also told her that this was his place now."

While I would guess the recognition to be similar, ferrets would probably
react to that recognition much differently. I would guess that they may
extend an invition to play to their long-lost friend. ;)

-kim, squirt (Ugh! Too warm!), pippi (Make the cold air blowers colder!),
atlas (Give me that cool night air!), and Jinx (What I wouldn't give for a
zipper on this fur coat!)
