Ferrets are animals built for detecting scents--nearly a third of the
skull is dedicated to detect odor (orange region), while a large portion
of the brain is used to process olfactory signals (blue region).  Few
non-mustelid carnivores even come close (proportionally), and humans are
not even in the ballpark when it comes to detecting odor.  Ferrets are
especially odor centered animals, as can be graphically seen in the
photo, and odors can be used quite effectively in enrichment programs.
