I have to second the nomination of the name "Spero"....
 
I am thinking about a friend who lost a leg to diabetes (actually an
infection that's a diabetic complication) years ago.  Even though he knew it
was going to happen and had been in the hospital a long time and had
counselling in preparation the amputation was still a shock.
 
He is doing OK, now... just a week or two later he was driving his wife up
the wall looking for stuff to do around the house.
