This is a problem at many pet stores-misinformation. The only thing that I
can tell you is what United Vaccine (FERVAC-D) have told me. A kit under 6
wks of age has some natural immunity passed down from the nursing mother.
The kit needs a series of shots beginning at 6-8 weeks, as the immunity
begins to wear off. The series is in three week intervals at 6-8 weeks, 11
weeks, and the final yearly booster at 14 weeks. If they do not have these
vaccinations, then the kits are in danger of contracting distemper. Many
pet stores tell the unsuspecting owners that the kits do not need any more
shots, when in fact they do. Recommendations now are for yearly rabies &
distemper shots, with heartworm preventatives as a beginning. No, I am not
a vet, but I can tell you I have seen 6 ferrets die of distemper and it is
an ugly disease. I will risk an anaphylactic reaction anyday to my pets
dying of distemper, which is 100% fatal in ferrets. FERVAC-D is the only
USDA approved vaccine, which means that this is the only shot that the vets
can give. Shelters like myself can give Galaxy or Fromm (although I don't)
without worrying about lawsuits. The "moxy" shot was probably amoxicillian,
which is commonly prescribed to ferrets with cold-like symptoms. Believe
me, I have not run into a veterinarian who wasn't after the animals best
interests when recommending shots. The receptionist who gave the
information probably consulted the vet or a tech, but in any case gave some
very sound advice. (this coming from someone whose vet "tab" is currently
about $600.00) Good Luck with your furry, and I wholeheartedly recommend to
get those shots!
