Reading about Bob Church's ugly Stella reminded me of a wonderful little
ugly ferret from The Ferret Nook, Inc. Sully was found a few years ago
walking the streets in a small town in Wisconsin called Sullivan -
therefore, his name of Sully. Sully had started life as an albino ferret,
but the only indications of that were his sore looking red eyes. He was
obviously adrenal, extremely bald, old, and had recurring eye infections.
The first few months Sully was in the shelter, I didn't pay much attention
to him. Whenever I was cleaning his cage or changing his litter box he
seemed asleep in his sleep sack. One day I left the cage door open (he was
on the bottom tier), and he slipped out when my back was turned. Wow!
Sully started racing around making loud dooking noises and running and
nipping at any ferrets in his trail. He was a favorite of several of us
volunteers - especially Stan. Stan brought him rolls of paper towels just
for Sully to unroll. One day during our Shelter Ferret Fun Day, I brought
him outside after most of the people were gone. Sully and I sat in the
fenced area that we had held our races, etc. He just went crazy - being
outside in the air, exposed flesh (I was wearing shorts) for fast nips.
Though he had been on meds for his eyes and melatonin for his adrenal
disease - his eyes never looked too good, and he never grew any fur. Bob
Church is right, Sully would never have won any prizes at a show, but he
was so funny and so loved. Still, Sully surely enjoyed life - he loved his
mush - and loved to play and nip. We had to say a good-bye to our dear
Sully a couple of weeks ago. His old body just gave out. Stan and I have
a difficult time walking in Sully s room at the Ferret Nook.
