Painting a ferret cage

Some ferret and rat cages were left behind at my house.  Some have some
rust on them.  I know how to remove the rust.  I need the name of a safe
paint to use on the cages after they are cleaned up.  As we all know
sooner or later a ferret will chew on its cage bars.
