I agree with what you say that TOO much of a good thing like probiotics
is not a good thing. I add some feline Forti Flora to our ferrets' soup
about twice a week, but not a lot. I find that this does help keep
things well balanced in terms of proper digestion, while still letting
their bodies do most of the production of the 'good' bacteria. Luna
and Trinny have some stomach problems, so they get a little more of the
Forti Flora when things act up, but I still try to be very careful not
to over do it with the supplementation. I believe that it has helped a
lot in managing IBD, and it's also a very good thing when one of them
has been on an antibiotic.
