Actually not.  Ferrets cost exactly as much as the sellers think they can
sell them for.  $200 to $500 is very high for ferrets - in the DC area they
are anywhere from $90 to under $200.  There are some ranches in the US that
will sell ferrets for as little as $25.  Many pet stores will try to price
them low enough that folks will buy onimpulse.
 
You are confusing the reason folks charge for placing ferrets that they
can't keep with what appears to be pet prices.
