My 5 month old male digs in his food bowl too. It's real annoying,
because he literally throws away 95% of the food we put in his cage--
it ends up in the drip tray and I chuck it out. He'll begin digging as
soon as we put food in the bowl, almost as though he prefers it empty.

Luckily, the cats eat the same food (Science Diet Feline Maint.) and they're
slow and steady all-day eaters, so he steals from their bowl. Otherwise the
weasel would go hungry. I've recently speculated that he doesn't like the
shape of his food bowl-- it's one of those round-bottomed dog bowl types,
bought because it can't be easily tipped (he used to just throw his other
bowl around and much of the food ended up *outside* the cage). Haven't had
a chance to test the theory yet. Oddly enough, he doesn't usually dig in
the cats' bowls, although they're the same type.

Strange little buggers, aren't they?
