In re-reading your post, I'm wondering if the number of ferrets threw them
off - obivously, 3 ferrets aren't going to fit in the regulation size
carrier they require - and you shouldn't consider not giving them food/water/
litter!!  They need their litter pan whether in the cargo or in the cabin!!
 
It's is possible that maybe purchasing another seat would help, and then
you could get 2 in 1 carrier, 1 in another, and have 2 seats to stick each
carrier under.  This way you would have room for a litter pan/food/water in
each carrier.
 
Nevertheless, I will still investigate and will post results early next week.
