Just another tid bit thrown into the mix.........

I have a shelter, and do adoptions via PetsMart. But ........... No one
has mentioned, at least that I have seen, that PetsMart policy is to only
offer adoption space to '501c3' shelters. You have to be a recognized
501c3 shelter. That's a rather involved, lengthy, expensive process.
And we know shelters are rolling in spare cash! I was lucky and got help
with my 501c3 status, and so am allowed to adopt out via PetsMart. But
without that paperwork, you are SOL.

I know there are probably a few of you out there getting away without it
on the good graces of local managers. But their written policy, on their
site and in their managers handbooks, requires that 501c3 status and
there can be significant ramifications for the manager if he/she gets
caught by corporate violating that policy.

So pro or con on the sales issue, realize it's not a matter of a shelter
being able to just set up shop and start adopting out. Discounting all
the other logistical problems, transportation, safety, volunteers, etc,
etc, there are legal hoops, significant hoops, PetsMart is requiring
shelters to jump through before they can even be on the property.

So don't get the idea of 'if there's a shelter in the area PetsMart won't
sell ferrets in my town', the situation is way more complex than that.

And for those of you who are pro another retail outlet ..... come to
'Vegas. I'll be glad to give you a tour that will change your mind.
