Sand for ferret sandboxes

I am looking at building some sort of sandbox for ferret digging, rolling,
tunneling fun, but I am unsure as to the appropriate "fill" material.  Is
play sand OK?  Or is loose dirt better, or something else entirely?
Anybody can shed some light, we would greatly appreciate it!
