I'm thinking that it's just the natural new fibers of the carpet or
maybe that the carpet was pre-treated with some type of stain resistant
chemical because every time the furkids start walking on it (outside of
their linoleum room), they begin coughing and gaging and pawing at their
mouths.

new carpeting is extremley toxic for ferrets and people as it is
constantly outgassing. that new carpet or paint smell or even new car
smell is toxic chemicals and i am extrmely sensitive to all of these.
runny nose, sore throat etc.. the epa knows that most indoor places are
more toxic then the outdoors. most carpet is loaded with chemicals that
are very harmful to health. rule of thumb if it smells dont buy it.
and the fuzzies are right down there breathing it in. if i could afford
to i would have all wood floors or laminate and put non smelling carpet
runners down or outgass them in the sun for a few days. this is a
serious situatioin you are in and i dont have a simple solutiion. unless
you could put plastic on top of all the carpeting? any body else have
any suggestions.
