It is my understanding after talking with several vets over the years that
as long as your Christmas tree water is UNTREATED, it's perfectly fine for
fuzzies to drink.  I don't think the type of tree matters, as we've have
both pine and fir over the years and no one's ever gotten sick.
 
If there is flocking (fake snow stuff) or paint around the part of the trunk
that is in the water you need to get it off because they WILL get sick from
that.
 
Oh, and check the poor tree.  Daily.  Maybe even twice-daily.  I've watered
ours four times since Sunday evening.  :)
