Try this to stop the little ones from digging in the food:
 
Take the plastic top from a 5 lb coffee cans and cut 3 or 4 ferret head
sized holes in it.  Duct tape it to the top of the food dish.  While this
will keep the food from flying out (more or less), you can expect a bit of
exploration of this WONDERFUL new food filled 'tunnel' system.
