I was also one of those that thought that an escape could never happen to
me, but it did. To say I'm overly protective when it comes to my boys is an
understatement. I know I probably irritate my wife sometimes because of how
much I worry about them.

A month or two ago we finally got some cool weather down here (here being
Miami, where we don't get much relief from using A/C) and my wife wanted to
open up the house. I wouldn't allow it until both boys were locked safely
away in their cage. That doesn't happen often because we allow them free
run almost all the time. After a day of fresh air, night came and it got a
little too cool for us and we closed up the house and let the boys out.

Shortly after, I noticed the blinds on a window in the family room rustling
in the breeze. I FREAKED. I yanked back the blinds and sure enough, a
window had been forgotten and a screen had been pushed out. Our cat has
been known to do this so we made a quick check of the house to locate both
the ferrets but could only find Beasley. My wife continued a check of the
house to make sure while I ran outside. After a frantic search of our back
yard and a few of the neighbors, we moved to the front. I heard my wife
yell, "Is that Spaz?" Sure enough, he was in a neighbor's driveway two
houses away, under their car. He wasn't too happy to be brought back in as
we had to corner him to catch the little stinker.

So no matter how protective one is, or how strongly one feels that it can
never happen to them, it takes only a single slip, a momentary lapse and
they're gone. I sure would like to see a ferret sized Lojack.

For the ferrets,
Mike
