Sounds too familiar.  :)
 
The only thing I've found the fabric lovers won't eat is Fleece.  Even if
you don't sew, the edges don't have to be "finished" since it won't ravel,
they love the feel of it and there's usually many very pretty prints to
chose from in your local fabric store.  You can get two nice size blankies
from one yard of fabric.
 
Now if I could just get my washer to stop eating the blankets here!
