Thank you to all who wrote with advice...I am embarrassed and ashamed to
tell you that I tracked down the cause of the bloody poops.  Bill (the
ferret) had found a large box of red jelly candy feet that Bill (the son)
had brought back from his summer vacation and left in easy access to ferret
sampling.  Bill was the only ferret who ate them and he ate a lot.....
hence the red poop.
 
I was so overjoyed and relieved when I realized what had been happening
that I could not get mad at my son (who after all these years with ferrets
should have known better).  Anyway thank you again and now we just have to
work on putting some weight back on him.  Little devil.
