I, too, have what I refer to as "The Ferret Luge" going down my
staircase.  When we lived in FL I was in a one-story apartment but now
I live in a townhome in WA with three flights of stairs - much to the
ferrets' delight.
 
I keep my tube in place by pinching it behind a tower of XBox games and
the entertainment center.  It's been in place like that for well over a
year and hasn't come loose - no matter how much traffic gets backed up
in the Luge!
