A very experienced ferret person I know has a theory about adrenal
problems and maybe other hormone-related issues in ferrets.  She thinks
the incidence of adrenal disease is at least partly due to the artificial
seasonal cycles large breeders create with lighting to bring their
breeding ferrets into season more often than they naturally would breed
in nature.  Her theory is that the parents' hormonal systems are affected
by the unnatural 'seasons' in a way that also affects the kits in utero,
so that the kits' hormonal systems never really have a chance to be
normal.
 
Any comments on that?  And did the intensive breeding of ferrets in large
numbers begin about the same time their lifespans began to decline?
