Regarding ferrets, cats, and waterbeds:

We originally had just a fitted waterbed mattress pad on our waterbed,
until the cats put a couple of holes in the mattress anyhow. Then we
added an old blanket under the mattress pad, and fixed that problem.
We later found out that ferrets would make holes in the waterbed
mattress if we only had one layer of padding, but not if both, so yes,
mattress pads really did help us. Actually, I think keeping the claws
clipped helped also.

Our ferrets also think that under the waterbed is a great place to
stash things. Last we counted there was a rather stunning number of
"prizes" under there.

Baby and ferret note:
After about 3+ months of putting fingers in the ferret cage, my 11.5
month old boy finally got nipped. Much howling but no visible signs
of pinkness, much less real damage. Needless to say he got only a
little sympathy, and a couple of repititions of "I told you so". And
of course, being a little spud, it didn't deter him a bit. :)
