I don't think you need to worry about cooler temps in your house in winter
months.  Ferrets can tolerate cooler temps much easier than they can the
warmer temps.  Posts in today's FML are right on about the dangers of hot
weather - I've never heard the bit about ferrets gradually adapting to warm
temperatures.  They have problems tolerating levels above 85 degrees.
 
If he has a blanket or hat he can snuggle under or in while you're gone,
he should be fine even in a 50 degree house.
