It can work but be careful! Please don't flame me, these were avoidable
accidents and I know it.

We had brought home a baby cockatiel who was handfed and a real lover.
I left the ferrets roaming the living room while I ran an errand. The
cockatiel escaped his cage (which has since been thrown out) and was dead
by the time I got home. I was heartbroken and beat myself up over my
stupidity. So ferrets will kill small birds.

My cockatoo who does not have a lower beak was in a cage next to the
ferrets. We came home after vacation and I let him out on top of his
cage. While we went out to dinner he climbed onto the top of the ferret
cage. When we got home we found him hiding with his left leg chewed up.
It looked like raw chicken. The ferrets must have pulled his leg through
the top of the cage and gnawed on it. He could not defend himself
because of his beak disability (happened before I got him). Luckily our
vet is fantastic and he quickly recovered and is perfectly normal again.

My main points are:
1) never assume because it hasn't happened yet, that it won't;
2) it only takes once;
3) make sure cages are absolutely secure!

Both of these things happened years ago, but I still have not gotten a
small parrot since, as I am still blaming myself for my stupidity.
