ear cleaning

My two little fuzzies, Koko and Loki, have trouble excepting getting their
ears clean.  While i clip their nails, i put ferret tone on their tummies
to distract them.  Will this work for cleaning their ears?  I already have
many war wounds from trying to subdue them and clean their ears...is there
anything i can do to make it easier?  Thanks.
