Dear Buffie,
 
Ferrets are legal and happily living in abundance in New Mexico.  My family
lives in Albuquerque and we have had two ferrets.  Sly-Bear was our first
ferret but he passed away two years ago.  We now have Molly Brown, a lost
ferret whom we found beside a dumpster... she is very happy with us.  I
miss her a lot as I just recently moved to California where they are indeed
illegal.
