Hi, fuzzy-people!
 
Reading about the recent ferret references in different books, I suddenly
remembered one that I read for a Nineteenth-Century British Novel class that
I took not long after I acquired my first ferret.  In George Elliot's _The
Mill on the Floss_, Tom Tulliver, the brother of the main character Maggie,
is talking with a friend of his as a young boy.  They are discussing
clearing barns of rats for a living when they grow up.  Tom talks about
using dogs for this work, but his friend tells him that ferrets are better,
especially white ferrets with red eyes.  Later in the book, the friend does
indeed have a ratting business, and uses ferrets.  I would give the page
numbers for references (as any good English major should :)!), but it's been
a couple of years since I read it.  I remember how excited I was as a new
ferret owner to come across a mention of ferrets in a classic book.
