We have had similar experiences with different noises.  My son's father
has a bunch of different animal calls.  One day he was playing with one,
and it was making the ferrets crazy.  One of them came up and bit him on
the arm!  I felt he had it coming to him for teasing, but he did not see
it that way!  :)
 
Instinct tells them that mice, etc make that noise and to go after it.
