Rachel,
My favourite ant deterrent is still talcum powder.  It has the advantages
of smelling nice, using up those unwanted presents, being harmless to
(everything except fuzzies with severe allergies) and driving the ants
away.  Just sprinkle where ever the ants are coming in to your home,
under the food & water bowls, around the skirting boards and on window
sills.  Many people won't try it because it seems too simple but it
really does work.
