To Jill K: Hello. I have two ferrets and three cats, and I understand your
problem.  There is a mat that is designed for cat litter boxes. When the cats
step out of the litter, it tracks all the litter from there little paws.  It
works wonderful.  I wish I remembered the name of it, I got it so long ago
from a catalog that specialized in cats.  I would ask your local pet store,
or you might want to check a place that only specialize in cats. Sorry, I
couldn't give you more detail than that.
But there is such a thing as a cat mat that tracks litter.  Good Luck.
